Price Double Check vs AP automation

Dernière vérification · Cette page est fournie en anglais.

Price Double Check vs AP automation is two different checks. BILL, Stampli or Tipalti move a supplier invoice to payment: capture, coding, approval, a match against the purchase order in your accounting system, and payment. We do one thing they do not: check the invoice against the supplier's own price list, from a forwarded email, with no system behind it.

The two are easy to confuse because both say the word matching. They match different things. An AP platform matches the invoice to the purchase order you keyed into your ERP, and to the goods receipt booked against it. That is a control on your own records. We match the invoice to the price list the supplier sent you, by item code, and we also read your purchase order from Sent so the same three documents line up without anyone keying them. This page sets the two side by side, with the vendors' own pages as the sources, so you can see which one you are missing.

What AP automation does, in the vendors' own words

BILL sells accounts payable on a per-user subscription. Its pricing page lists Essentials at $49, Team at $65 and Corporate at $89 per user per month, with Enterprise on a custom quote. Two-way matching is a Corporate feature; the Enterprise tier adds automatic 2 and 3-way matching and sync with QuickBooks Enterprise, Oracle NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Microsoft Dynamics. The purchase order is not born in BILL: in its own announcement of three-way matching, the PO and the receipt details sync directly from the accounting software, and BILL shows the POs it finds for that vendor when the invoice arrives.

Stampli publishes no price; its pricing page is a request-a-quote form. What it promises is fully automated invoice capture, semi-automated 2 and 3-way matching with full automation from its own AI, customer-defined tolerances, and a bi-directional sync of live PO data with fourteen or more ERPs, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Dynamics 365 and QuickBooks among them. It is written for the CFO, the controller and the AP team.

Tipalti lists Accounts Payable from $99 per month with unlimited users, plus transaction pricing per invoice and per payment on top. The plan carries auto invoice capture and GL coding, 2 and 3-way PO matching, approvals, reconciliation with the ERP and payment in more than 200 countries. Its PO matching page describes tolerance thresholds by amount or percentage, at bill or line level, and a PO whose coding pre-populates the invoice, which is to say a PO that already lives in the ERP.

Three products, one shape. Each one presupposes an accounting system or an ERP, a purchase order keyed into it, a receipt booked against it, an approval chain, and a bank account it pays from. None of the three pages mentions a price list or a contract price. The matching is invoice to your PO, and the PO price is taken as right.

The check none of them makes

A purchase order match answers one question: did the supplier bill what we ordered. It does not ask whether what we ordered was priced right. The PO price was keyed by a buyer from a quote or a price list; a keying slip, an expired price or a supplier who moved the price after the order all flow through the match and pass, because the invoice agrees with the PO. Phacet's guide to three-way matching automation calls this the most significant gap in sustained financial impact: the match verifies invoice against PO, not that either price reflects what was negotiated with the supplier.

In the one chain we validated the product on, a sports-nutrition manufacturer billing a Baltic distributor, 382 invoice lines were compared with the price list in force. 327 matched exactly and 41 were billed at a price other than the list price. One of those, a line at 17.75 percent over the list, ate 91 percent of the margin of its delivery. Every one of the 11 invoices agreed with its printed total to the cent, so a total-level control would have passed all of them. A PO match asks whether the invoice equals the order, not whether the order equals the list, so it is not built to show them either. Only a line-by-line comparison against the price list shows the 41. How we do that comparison is on the price list check page.

Price Double Check vs AP automation, what each needs

Price Double Check vs AP automation is plainest in what each asks of you. AP automation is a system you adopt. There is a subscription per user or per month, transaction fees at Tipalti, an integration to an accounting system that must already exist, a purchase order discipline inside that system, and approvers who log in. Stampli's own claim is deployment in weeks, offered as fast. We are an address you forward to. There is no login, no dashboard, no integration and no setup; the price list and the invoices are already in your mailbox.

The two tables are honest about scale. An AP platform's price buys a payment run, an audit trail and a place for approvals to live. Ours buys a comparison. Documents are counted, not pages or emails, and colleagues share one account on the paid plans. Prices are what the vendors showed on 7 September 2026; two of the three are per user or usage based, so the figure for your team is on their page, not this one.

When AP automation is the right buy

When the price check is what is missing

Using both at once

Price Double Check vs AP automation is not an either-or; there is no conflict. An AP platform reads the invoice from an inbox or a portal; nothing stops the same invoice being forwarded to your address on the way. The platform moves it to payment against your PO; our reply tells you, before the approval, which lines are above the list price and by how much, and which codes on the invoice were not on the price list at all. The buyer takes the table to the supplier and asks for a credit note; the AP platform pays the corrected amount. We do not touch the payment, do not integrate and do not ask a question back. The reply states what it read, that the line sums equal the printed total to the cent, the findings, what it could not match with the amounts, and what to send to get more. Why we insist on reading the whole invoice before comparing any line is in the article on why a parser is not an answer.

One caution in the other direction. If you expect a tool to approve, code and pay, we are the wrong page; the three vendors above are the category to look at. If you expect a tool to tell you that item 5116 was billed at 14.20 when the list in force says 12.06, that is the whole of what we do, and no AP platform we could find claims to do it.

En bref

AP automation already does three-way matching
It does, against the purchase order and the goods receipt inside your accounting system. The PO price is taken as correct, so a PO keyed from an old price list passes the match. Price Double Check compares the invoice with the supplier's price list itself, which is the leg the match does not have.
Price Double Check is not a replacement for BILL, Stampli or Tipalti
It is not. Those products capture, code, approve and pay invoices, and Tipalti pays across borders. We only compare documents and reply by email; nothing is approved or paid on our side.
The vendors' prices in this comparison are current as of September 2026
They are the figures on the vendors' own pricing pages on 7 September 2026, linked below. BILL is priced per user, Tipalti adds per-invoice and per-payment fees, and Stampli publishes no price, so your actual cost comes from their quote, not from this page.
A purchaser without an ERP can still get a purchase order match
Yes, from the documents already in the mailbox. The PO is in Sent, the order confirmation and the invoice are in Inbox; forwarded together they are joined by item code and the substituted codes, short deliveries and price changes are listed in the reply.

Forward one invoice and the price list to your address and the reply shows the lines your AP platform would have passed.
